A Little About Us: History and Governance
The False Creek Co-operative Housing Association (FCCHA) was founded in 1974 on the motto “People Helping People”. We have since, through participation, responsibility and good neighbouring amongst the members, been able to sustain affordable housing at a prime location in Vancouver.
Our co-op functions through “co-operative spirit” and the involvement of its members on the Board of Directors and the following committees: Finance, Membership, Internal Building Maintenance, External Building Maintenance, Grounds/Gardening (Enclave 5 and 6), Newsletter, Move in-Move out, Apartment Housing, Communal Space, Website and Parking.
Guiding Principles
Affordability
We believe that housing is a human right and should be affordable, stable, and accessible for all. Our non-market, not-for-profit co-op model supports a mix of households having a range of incomes. We responsibly and resourcefully manage our finances and generously donate our time and talents to allow our community to flourish.
Belonging
Our co-op is a village within the city of Vancouver on the South shores of False Creek, where neighbours support and value the dignity of each member. We believe it is the responsibility of each of us to contribute to the common good of our community ahead of individual interests. We recognize that we are stronger together by working together within and across neighbourhoods.
Diversity
We welcome members who share our cooperative values. Our community embraces diversity of age, ethnicity, culture, ability, gender, sexual orientation, religion and income.
Democracy
We are a social democracy. As members, we each have the right and obligation to participate and share in the governance and management of the co-operative. Individually and collectively we shape the community in which we live.
Environment
We believe in being good stewards of public land. We strive to live together sustainably and to implement environmentally sound practices that contribute to the health and resilience of our community and our planet.
Legacy
We are united in the common goal of securing and sustaining the longevity of False Creek Co-operative Housing Association. We pass on our shared principles and co-operative living model to future generations as well as to the larger community through example, education, and advocacy.
